About Our Company

West Workshop is an award-winning architecture and design practice located in Arlington, Virginia.  The office has completed a range of work, including private residences, restaurants, public spaces, schools and public art installations. West Workshop practices a design philosophy that focuses heavily on the specifics of a place, materiality, and craft, regardless of the project type or scale. We believe that exceptional design emerges from a thoughtful collaboration between client, designer and builder.

Our Services

Architecture & Interior Design

Residential -
Working closely with homeowners, contractors and real estate developers, our residential projects include individual homes, additions, renovations and kitchen/bath remodels.  Innovative residential design is a growth area of the business, which includes modern modular homes and energy efficient home design.  We work along with our clients, consultants and contractors from the ground up, covering design, interiors, permitting and build-out to create beautiful and functional projects that meet our clients’ needs and budgets.

Commercial –
We offer full design services for our commercial clients - from conception to equipment to interiors and build-out. Our approach and experienced team of designers,  consultants and contractors allow us to understand the unique requirements of each client and execute projects accordingly.

Furniture & Object Design

We often refer to these projects as “small architecture”.  West Workshop designs and creates one-of-a-kind furniture and objects specifically crafted for each project.  For example, this may include a custom coffee table for the home, light fixtures for a restaurant or a built-in bookcase or storage for an office.   We collaborate with a trusted team of skilled artisans and craftsmen throughout the country, allowing us to employ an extensive range of materials, techniques and finishes for beautiful and functional results.

Public Art

Using a research-based approach, West Workshop pursues public art commissions as opportunities for architectural and tectonic experimentation. Common themes of this work explore the relationship between material, place, and the fabrication process.

Our Process

Getting a project built can be daunting and overwhelming, even for the experienced owner.  West Workshop and our team of professionals listen first, and then guide you through the personalized design and build process.

Project Conceptualization

Before we start to envision potential designs for a project, we ask a lot of questions, sit back, and listen. What are the goals of this project? How will the space be used? What is a must have vs. a nice to have? What is the project budget?

After producing several schemes in response to our listening exercise, we meet to discuss the owner’s likes and dislikes of the initial schemes.  West Workshop will then develop a hybrid scheme based upon the owner’s preferences from those initial ideas. Additional work is put into suggesting finishes, materials, and the construction techniques to be implemented.

Design Development

During this creative and collaborative stage, we produce a variety of detailed drawings further developing the chosen design strategy to help bring the project to life.  This phase will visualize the design concept more fully for the client prior to proceeding to permit and construction drawing phase.  This includes but is not limited to: refined floor plans, developed exterior images and a continued conversation about finish materials, fixtures and appliances.

Construction Drawings

This phase ties together all collective decisions and produce comprehensive construction drawings which will be utilized to (a) apply for a building permit, (b) solicit contractor bids, and (c) provide guidance to a contractor on how-to build your project.

Project Bidding

During the Project Bidding phase, we assist the owner with identifying pre-qualified contractors to bid on their project. After receiving bids, we help the client review construction cost proposals and make a recommendation on which contractor to hire.

Construction Advisory

As a client advocate, we liaise directly with contractors to ensure the construction process delivers the envisioned project.
