Rather than replicate the most common approaches to
home additions in Northern Virginia – Pop-Up, Hunchback, Straight Back and
Tear Down – we designed a proposed solution that actually stay true to the
scale and context of the existing structure. Greenway Modular proposes a prefabricated&#38;nbsp;addition to an existing 1,250 sq ft Cape Cod home in Falls Church, Virginia.&#38;nbsp; Our strategy straddles the line between Straight Back and Detached while
maintaining the existing home’s footprint and respecting the scale of the
neighboring houses.


Manufactured off site, each module measures approximately
300 sf each. The first floor consists of a dining room and flexible space
for office use and a guest bedroom.&#38;nbsp;The second-floor module consists of a
master bedroom suite, with a bathroom and custom, built-in storage.&#38;nbsp;Other
design features include galvanized steel details throughout, lap siding with
mitered corners, multi-wall polycarbonate guard rails, a perforated operable shade system, and
skylights capturing soft northern light.

Shephard St. is an upgrade to an existing english basement entry corridor.&#38;nbsp; Composed of nearly 1,000 pyramid-shaped wood blocks, each block was cut from laminated sheets of leftover plywood, most of which was the existing white plywood found wrapping the entry way. As a way to stay within the client’s budget, we also used leftover wood that was sourced from previous jobs and from the surrounding neighborhood alleys.

The rules guiding the building process were simple and consistent 1.) Laminate 3 pieces of plywood at random, 2.) Cut wood into 2” and 6” cubes , and 3.) Cut each cube on 4 sides at 25 degree angles to achieve pyramid shape. Through this blind process of making we were unable to fully anticipate the character of each block and the overall composition until after the wood was shaped and placed next to each other. The results of this process revealed numerous varieties of wood grains, interesting juxtapositions of paint color and wood color, and a variety of other unforeseen results. &#38;nbsp;


Each block was sealed and affixed to exterior grade plywood panels. All panels were fastened to the existing stud construction surrounding the entry way, including the ceiling and a storage access door panel. Additional wood studs were added for support as necessary.

 The final installation incorporates an access panel for the existing storage room and a built-in mailbox.

POLYHUT was a site-specific proposal for the annual Warming Huts Competition on the Assinioboine River in Winnepeg, Canada.&#38;nbsp; Our scheme explored a dialogue between two seemingly disparate topics: offsite construction (prefab) and site specificity.


The installation consists of 300+ CNC-milled multi-wall polycarbonate panels (8 unique) sandwiched together by a system of dowel rod friction connections (also 8 unique) that weave and intersect strategically throughout the assembly.

The combination of laminated translucent panels, intersecting dowels and the play of light create a visual and tactile experience. Panels conceal the skid platform below to make the installation appear to be floating and as an extension of the frozen riverscape. At each exterior corner of the structure, dowels extend and connect to form handles that provide a steady grip for approaching ice-skaters. Users enter the fully translucent interior by climbing through a 5’ tall opening. Inside, occupants are huddled together low to the ground, sitting or lying on exposed polycarbonate benches. Systematically missing or altered panels provide visibility of the structural elements, passing ice-skaters and to the landscape beyond. Meanwhile, the 9” thick walls and perforated 10’-0” tall vaulted ceiling provide a datum to track the ever-changing light conditions as it scatters throughout the structure.You can see our other public art projects here.

CoWork Cafe is located along a busy commercial corridor in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia.&#38;nbsp; The program for the project combines an existing 300sf gelato retail space with an adjacent co-working space.

Our solution addressed the programmatic needs of two distinct business models. 1) How to separate the retail customers (high volume, short-term users) from the co-working users (long-term users with laptops and a need for privacy) during the daytime; 2) How to effectively transform the space to easily accommodate diverse revenue streams after 5pm (ex. winebar, auditorium, art show). The distinct use requirements needed to be met while maintaining a sense of flow within the space. Our proposal utilizes a variegated slat system of repurposed lumber&#38;nbsp; to create visual connection between the spaces while maintaining a sense of separation. &#38;nbsp; We expressed the space divide with hanging panels, and matching, mobile partitions enabled a flex space that could be transformed according to the need of the event. Small, private nooks off the main space allow co-work users to maximize their privacy while at night the panels help facilitate new uses. &#38;nbsp;

Twin Peaks is a 2-bay bus shelter
consisting of 200 wood and steel framing studs. The standardized building
material is assembled into panels that lean on each other to form both a wall
and roof system. The project plans for a portion of the wood to be re-purposed
from an adjacent construction site and other construction sites throughout
greater Hyattsville, Maryland . 


The 14’ tall structure will 1) protect riders from the
elements while waiting for a bus; 2) provide a complete visual connection to
approaching WMATA&#38;nbsp;buses and other riders; 3) capture and amplify the process of arrival and
departure for riders and passersby via the use of a novel building material
assembly and bus shelter form; and 4) act as a memorable reference point along
the Rhode Island Ave. corridor for decades to come .....”My house is one block
from the Twin Peaks…”


In addition to establishing a new place-making
landmark in the Gateway Arts District, the shelter will contain 2 benches for seating of up
to 8 people. Solar-powered L.E.D. lighting will be located throughout the
structure.
