Our Company

West Workshop is an award-winning architecture and interior design studio founded in 2017 by architect Kurt West with offices in Raleigh, NC and Washington, DC .

The firm’s design practice operates in the field of contemporary design across a spectrum of scales, including commissioned architectural projects, interiors, custom furniture and public artworks.

Our Services

Architecture & Interior Design

Commercial Projects –
Our commercial clients rely on West Workshop for full design services – guiding the process from conception to finish selections to construction.  With our personalized approach, our experienced team of designers, consultants and contractors work together with an in-depth understanding of the unique requirements of each client’s operation and business objectives.

Residential Projects -
West Workshop undertakes residential projects ranging from individual homes to additions and interior renovations. Working closely with homeowners, contractors, and real estate developers, we embrace innovative residential design, which includes modern modular homes and energy-efficient design. Involved in every phase of the project with our clients, the design team, consultants, and contractors strive from start to finish to incorporate beautiful and functional elements that meet our clients’ needs and budgets.

Furniture & Object Design

More than utilitarian, we refer to these projects as “small architecture”. West Workshop designs and creates one-of-a-kind furniture and objects specifically conceived and crafted for each project. This may include a custom coffee table for a home, light fixtures for a restaurant, or a built-in bookcase or storage for an office. We collaborate with a trusted team of skilled artisans and craftsmen throughout the country, allowing us to employ an extensive range of materials, techniques, and finishes for beautiful and functional results.

Public Art

West Workshop pursues public art commissions as opportunities for architectural and tectonic experimentation. Common themes of this work explore the relationship between construction materials & methods, context and utility. You can see our Public Art projects here.

Our People

Kurt West, AIA

Born into a military family, Kurt grew up throughout the U.S. and Germany, but he considers himself equally as much a Texan as he is a Hoosier. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Virginia with a Masters in Architecture and received a Bachelors in Architecture from Ball State University.  Prior to launching West Workshop, Kurt apprenticed at Morphosis Architects in Los Angeles in addition to stops in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Washington, DC. Kurt is married with 3 children, an avid baseball fan and licensed to practice architecture in Virginia, North Carolina and Washington, DC.

Kurt is currently an instructor at the Architecture Is Free Foundation; is taking classes at NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate; and has been an invited juror at Virginia Tech, SCAD and Ball State University, among other institutions.

Cailey Kurkul - Associate

Cailey is a Cleveland, OH, native and attended Kent State University where she received both a Bachelor and a Master’s of Architecture. With West Workshop, Cailey has been able to explore her interest in modern design, as well as exploring methods that bring together art and function in the architectural process. At WW she is involved with the entire process of projects through from conception to completion. In her spare time, Cailey cares for her plants and creates digital art prints, which can be found for sale on Etsy.
